About the `Ukulele Club of Hawai`i:
The `Ukulele Club of Hawai`i is a passion project founded in 2007 by Kanile`a `Ukulele co-owners Joe & Kristen Souza along with Kanile`a artist and Vaihi frontman Bruddah Sam Langi. It exists for the purpose of sharing and perpetuating the State of Hawai`i’s official modern instrument, the `ukulele. Gatherings are held the first Tuesday of every month (except January) at Windward Mall’s Center Court. There is no fee for membership or to attend gatherings. Monthly e-mail messages are sent out as reminders or to connect the members to `ukulele events happening in Hawai`i and worldwide. Kanile`a `Ukulele proudly sponsors the UCH and covers all funding for the venue, sheet music and prize giveaways.
About Kanile`a `Ukulele:
Kanile`a `Ukulele was founded in 1998 by husband-wife team Joe & Kristen Souza of He`eia, O`ahu, Hawai`i.
Joe is an accomplished musician and award-winning falsetto singer who’s love for the `ukulele led him to apprentice under Master Luthier Peter Burmudez. Joe’s goal has always been to create handcrafted heirloom masterpieces that can be played in the home, on stage or in the most demanding recording studios. With Kristen’s administrative and marketing savvy and Joe’s ability to incorporate modern technology in his milling techniques, his exclusive TRU (Total Resonating Ukulele) bracing system and a UV cured polyester finish, the Souzas have been able to do just that with an incredible team in their factory in Kāne`ohe, Hawai`i.
In 2007, a second line called Islander by Kanile`a was introduced for beginner `ukulele players wanting the signature Kanile`a sound on an affordable instrument.
Among the many artists that make Kanile`a their only `ukulele of choice are Kelly Boy De Lima and the group Kapena, the unpredictable Willie K., the sensational duo Sarah Maisel & Craig Chee, Aldrine Guerrero of Ukulele Underground, the fun loving Bruddah Sam Langi of the group Vaihi, the award-winning Steven Espaniola, the dynamic Jody Kamisato of `Ukulele Hale and his talented protegees Karlie G, Honoka & Azita, Lil’ Rev and more!!
Community is very important to Kanile`a `Ukulele which sponsors the `Ukulele Club of Hawai`i and has partnered with many organizations such as Ukulele Festival Hawaii, Make-A-Wish, Ryan’s Light, Pūnana Leo, Hō`ola Nā Pua as well as school music programs and ukulele festivals around the world.
