Pōhaku Means Stone

Pōhaku, meaning "stone" in Hawaiian, perfectly captures the essence of the Kanileʻa Pōhaku ʻUkulele. The ukulele’s unique dark tone comes from a meticulous staining process that uses alcohol-based dyes, applied in layers to achieve the ideal depth of color. Between each layer, the wood undergoes specific amounts of sanding, allowing the dye to build gradually and accentuate the natural grain pattern of the Quilted Maple. This careful approach results in a deep, stone-like richness that honors its namesake while showcasing the inherent beauty of the wood.

Arftul

The Pōhaku ʻUkulele features a side sound port strategically placed on the player’s side, allowing the sound to project directly towards the musician for a more immersive and personal playing experience. This thoughtful design enhances the auditory connection between player and instrument, bringing the rich tone of the ukulele closer. To ensure durability, a black front binding piece surrounds the sound port, providing essential protection for the edges while framing the body beautifully. This detail not only preserves the ukulele’s striking appearance but also reinforces its resilience, staying true to Kanileʻa’s dedication to quality and performance.

Fiery

The Pōhaku ʻUkulele is equipped with a graphite-infused black TUSQ nut and saddle, specially designed for increased hardness. This enhanced hardness minimizes any loss of vibrations as they transfer from the strings to the soundboard, allowing each note to resonate with clarity and fullness. Adding a unique visual element, the red poplar inlays are dyed to achieve a vivid, fiery red that echoes the look of molten lava, perfectly complementing the volcanic inspiration of the black-stained body. These details, both functional and aesthetic, make the Pōhaku an instrument that truly embodies Kanileʻa’s artistry and innovation.
